The idea of the Penny Post spread to a number of
towns throughout England. Some of these towns were
big enough to have receiving houses in addition to
the post office itself. This cover shows a boxed
“No 1.” It was mailed in Matlock Bath in Derbyshire.
Matlock Bath was part of the Wirksworth Penny Post,
and receiving house number one was located in
Matlock Bath.
The Wirksworth Penny Post stamp was poorly struck in
an inverted manner at the bottom of the letter. In
the enlargement, which is rotated so that the strike
is upright, it is possible to make out the
first “W” (left arrow), the “KSW”
(middle arrow) and the “TH” (right arrow).
The first “P” of “Penny Post”
is visible just below the first “W”.
