This cover was mailed to Edinburgh, Scotland on March 17, 1840, about four months after the halfpenny surcharge was abolished. It was mailed after uniform penny postage was introduced on January 10, 1840, and the large number “2” shows that two pence was charged. Red ink was used to note the prepaid amount, and the “PAID” handstamp confirms the prepayment.
