The dotted circle around the date stamp makes this marking visually interesting. The letter was mailed on November 24, 1871. The cancel includes the number 131, identifying it as the Edinburgh post office. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, each major city was given a cancel with a specific numeral to identify it.
