For many years, it was permitted to cut out the embossed
stamp from a piece of postal stationery and use it on
another envelope. This 1924 cover shows a halfpenny stamp
and a one penny stamp stamp cut from postal stationery and
applied to a letter along with a three penny normal postage
stamp.
The handwritten word “Free” at the top left presumably
indicates that no customs duties are payable.
