The British Empire Exhibition of 1924-1925 was the
subject of Britain’s first commemorative stamps. Two
stamps of the same design were issued in 1924, a red one
penny and a brown one and a half penny. The design
featured the British lion, the usual portrait of King
George V, and the inscription “British Empire Exhibition
1924.” The Exhibition was held at the Wembley exhibition
site, and these stamps are generally referred to as
“Wemblies.” For the second year of the exhibition, the
stamps were reissued with “1925” in the design instead
of “1924.” The 1925 issue is considerably scarcer than
the first issue.
A special postmark, also featuring the British lion,
was used on mail posted at the exhibition. This card has
the postmark lion nicely superimposed on the stamp’s
lion. The front of the postcard shows part of
the exhibition with a crowd of people walking
around.
