This letter was mailed in 1937 with a halfpenny stamp.
That stamp would have paid the postage for printed
matter, but it was not sufficient for a letter which
would have cost one and one-half pence. It was therefore
stamped “Liable to Letter Rate” and “2d To Pay,”
twice the deficient amount. The
“S.42” in the handstamp is the
office at which the postage due was assessed.
