Kind Edward VIII abdicated on December 10, 1936 so he could marry a divorcée. A well-prepared collector in the U.S. used a cacheted cover from the Edward VIII definitives and overprinted it with a message about the abdication, then had it cancelled in the U.S. on the same day.
