This cover was sent to Hawaii in 1939 and then returned when
it was not claimed. Of interest on the front is the stamp
and its attached label. It came from a booklet pane of five
stamps plus the label. Pairs such as these, and larger
multiples, are eagerly collected.
There is also a marking, “Do not use this wrapper or
envelope again.” This refers to the fact that during the
World War II period, envelopes were often reused by applying
a label or sometimes just a new stamp to the front. The Post
Office did not want this cover to be reused, probably
because it would have been too confusing with all the markings on it.
The back of the cover shows the reason that the cover was
returned. There is a check next to “unclaimed”
below the pointing finger.
