For a period of slightly over a year, mailers were permitted to continue
using predecimal stamps on mail, including in combination with decimal
stamps. This cover, mailed in July, 1971, has two predecimal 4d
stamps along with a decimal 5p stamp. The predecimal 4d stamps
were worth just over 1 1/2 new pence each, so the two of them
total slightly more than 3 pence. Therefore, this cover has
over 8 pence in postage, more than the airmail rate of 7 1/2p to
the United States at that time.
