The mailer of this cover used a predecimal 3d Wilding definitive. The date of May 31, 1974 can be read on the cancel of the postage due labels, and it is more than two years after predecimal stamps were declared invalid for postage. Therefore, the word “invalid” was written near the stamps and the information block shows 6p postage due, twice the second class rate of 3p. (Postage due mail was charged twice the due amount, a practice that dated back to the nineteenth century.)

The recipient paid the 6p as indicated by the postage due stamps. The mailer either didn't realize that this stamp was denominated in the old currency or else thought the British Post Office would not notice the difference.
