The fifth cover (Fig. 5) is not a Coronation cover but rather an FDC of
the low value definitives using a cover that was prepared for the
Coronation. The portrait is in blue, the flags in red and blue, and the
map of the Empire in red.

| Figure 1. This is a first day cover
of the first King George VI low value definitives on a cover that
was prepared for the Coronation. |
A sixth cachet was discovered on eBay (not shown). Like the last, it is a
definitive FDC although the illustration was prepared for the
Coronation. The cover is outlined in red and blue while the illustration
in the lower left corner is in blue. There is no indication of the printer. No
doubt additional attention to eBay will yield other Coronation cachets.
Hopefully, readers of this brief essay will provide the editor with
examples from their collections. Just for fun.
It is easy to see how one might build a large collection of Coronation
FDCs. Collect them not only by date but by cancellation as suggested by
the British catalogs. The collection could be embellished by the
inclusion of exotic destinations. Of course, preliminary art work would
be highly desirable. Some of the cachets used in the United Kingdom were
also used for Canadian Coronation FDCs. A large number are shown on the
website entitled “Coronation 1937, First Day Covers” maintained by Glenn
A. Estus at
http://geocities.com/gestus2002/coronation/Corn37.html.
The author provided a picture postcard souvenir of the Coronation that is shown below.
