(This is an edited version of an article written by Gordon Milne which appeared in the July, 1999 edition of the GBCC Chronicle.
The GBCC’s Third Annual National Convention, held in conjunction with NAPEX ’99 in McLean, VA over the weekend of June 4th to 6th, was, by all accounts, a resounding success.
Winner of the “Tom Current GBCC Founder’s Award” was Donald R. Hines of Oklahoma City for his Gold-Award-winning entry: “King George V Photogravure Issue: 1934 – 36.” (photo 5)
Other GBCC’ers also won major NAPEX medals, notably GBCC Chronicle Editor, Paul J. Phillips, of Knoxville, TN, who won two Gold Awards — one for “British Provincial Postal History — Carlisle, 1660 – 1865” and the other for “Fragile Reminders: Poland and the Poles in WWII and its Aftermath.”
John Powell, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, also won two awards — a Vermeil for “India Sea Post Office Handstamps 1868 – 1914” and a Silver-Bronze for “Charing Cross W.C. London Branch Office Squared Circle Hammers.”
GBCC Vice-President, Thomas P. Myers, of Lincoln, Nebraska was also a Vermeil Award winner for his exhibit “British External Airmail Rates During the Reign of George VI,” and Past-President Brock Covington, of Glen Echo, MD got a Silver Bronze for “A Victorian Sampler of the Revenues of Great Britain and Ireland.”
Patricia Stillwell Walker, who won the inaugural “Tom Current GBCC Founder’s Award” at INDYPEX in 1997 with her exhibit “Ireland: Postal History: 1661 through the 1890s” was the NAPEX ’99 Grand Award winner with the same exhibit.

The Society’s meetings and presentations over the weekend were well-attended and warmly appreciated by members and non-members alike.
On Friday afternoon, British dealer, Bill Barrell, of Spalding, Lincs. received the largest attendance of the whole weekend for his fascinating talk on G.B. stamps and related items that spanned the whole period from pre-stamp entires to current day. Highlighting the material he displayed was an authenticated copy of the extremely rare Penny Red Plate number 77. (photos 2 and 3)
That evening, thirteen members enjoyed a convivial social get-together at “Ireland’s Four Provinces” in Falls Church, VA.
GBCC President, Gordon Milne, gave his annual “State of the Club” address as part of the Club’s Annual Business Meeting — Gordon’s report was published in full in the July issue of the Chronicle. (photo 6)
Following that, Vice President, Tom Myers gave an absorbing slide presentation on “The Postal History of the Late Kings Period.” (photo 4)
The weekend’s events concluded with a (non)-meeting of the Marmalades at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
