Above left is an enlargement of one stamp image from the
letterpress printing plate pictured on the fourth pane. It has been flipped horizontally so
that the image can be compared to the stamp produced from that plate is at the right.
The stamp is from the George V definitive series issued in 1912.
The images show that letterpress is capable of much more detail and subtlety than is evident
in the Machin at the top of this page.
The penny lilac of 1881, below the George V stamp, is one of the
more attractive surface-printed Victorians. |
