Profile on Print

The letterpress pane
One of the letterpress-printed stamps from the fourth pane.

Shield your eyes! This enlargement shows how crudely fashioned the letterpress stamps in this booklet are. You may be able to see the lighter areas on the left and right sides of the stamp; these are the phosphor bands.

Enlargement of the letterpress-printed penny lilac of 1881

Above left is an enlargement of one stamp image from the letterpress printing plate pictured on the fourth pane. It has been flipped horizontally so that the image can be compared to the stamp produced from that plate is at the right. The stamp is from the George V definitive series issued in 1912. The images show that letterpress is capable of much more detail and subtlety than is evident in the Machin at the top of this page.

The penny lilac of 1881, below the George V stamp, is one of the more attractive surface-printed Victorians.
